WIFI 802.11b

-is the most popular wireless protocol
- They are good for laptops and can transfer up to 11Mb/s
- 800 Feet range site
- Very flexible, cheap to implement, increasingly popular
- To extend range you will need to have an amplifier
- Access point a wireless hub.

WIFI 802.11a

- Newer
- Speeds are much faster up to 54Mbs/sec

Disadvantages of having wireless

Does not have the range only up to 100 feet
Wireless issues, not just protecting it from hackers
802.11b operates in portable phone range
range - some materials block signal
encryption - wireless encryption protocol is easily broken.
access - by default access is open to all wireless station

For Protection
1) defense and better (AP Software and wireless, Wireless driver)
2) Separate wireless from wired network, such as IDS, Firewall, Kerberos.
3) Test for ranges and access.
